Noelle Gmyr

Perfectly Imperfect: Autism in Focus, through a series of intimate studio portraits, Gmyr captures the beauty of individuals diagnosed with Autism. She believes that each person is created in the image of God, and that there is profound beauty in the unique differences that make us who we are. To emphasize the individuality of each subject, Gmyr incorporates a personal element into each portrait session such as a toy or object of importance - something meaningful to each person that symbolizes their journey living with Autism. Despite many of her subjects being non-verbal, Gmyr connects with each individual through conversation while photographing them, fostering a personal bond that brings out their true personality. Her deep passion for this work is rooted in her own experience growing up with a sister who was diagnosed with autism, whose photos are featured in the body of work. As she photographs each person and learns their story, she often finds parallels with her sister’s journey, making her connection to the work even more personal. Through her art, Gmyr seeks to bring dignity to each participant, honoring their unique experiences and glorifying God in the process. Regardless of our differences, we are all children of God, each with a unique set of abilities that make us valuable as individuals.
