2025 Annual - Chloe Christine Heustis

Chloe Christine Heustis

“Invisible” is a portrait series by Chloe Christine addressing the theme of invisible illnesses–conditions that, though not outwardly visible, significantly affect the lives of those who live with them. Those with invisible illnesses often feel overlooked in their struggles and grapple with the unseen reality of their conditions. This project features individuals with a range of diagnoses, including autoimmune disorders, psychiatric conditions, chronic illnesses, and neurological disorders. Throughout the project, many subjects shared experiences of being told, “You don’t look sick,” causing the subject to feel invalidated or dismissed because they do not fit viewers’ preconceived notions of illness. Through what began as an exploratory project in her own experiences, the project transformed into a series highlighting each subject as an individual over their illness. By capturing subjects for their beauty in the face of individuals’ hidden battles, “Invisible” directs the viewer to the message that outward appearances do not reveal the hidden battles a person may be facing.
