Jocelyn Silva

Jocelyn Silva’s two grandfathers, Abuelito Mael and Alejandro Jaime Garcia, are the reason she is here in California today.  Both are the root of her family's expansion as they currently exist today.  In 1992 they came to the U.S., crossing the river and walking through the desert for days until they made it across the border. They left their wives and kids in Valle De Santiago to find a stable jobs where they could have a secure income.  Times were hard in  Mexico.  They had to figure out a way to support their families.  They made it to Chicago, where they made money cutting fruits in the fields.  They saved enough money to bring the entire family over to the U.S. one by one.  They trudged through the muddy river and walked through the unforgiving desert for days.  The women and children faced the risk of drowning and dehydration.  They looked toward “the land of opportunity.”  Their final destination was Pomona, California.  Each member of her family began to fulfill all of their hopes and dreams.  This was their new beginning (Nuevo Cominezo).  This is the story of Jocelyn’s family as she sifts through their archive and creates still images that give proof to their story.
