Daniel Andrés Arriola
In his work Made to Move, Daniel Andrés Arriola stepped into the skate culture of the Inland Empire, discovering resilience, camaraderie, and a shared drive to aim higher. Arriola found that while each skate park had its own unique culture, there was always an understanding that when someone fell, they would get right back up unashamed. When a skater landed a trick smoothly, the sound of boards banging against the pavement would echo around the park in recognition. It did not matter whether skaters had just met or had been skating together for years; they were all connected by their shared love of skateboarding.
Using a simple setup, Arriola captured genuine moments with the skaters who frequented his local skate parks by building connections with his subjects while letting them skate as they normally would. This approach of spontaneous capture, combined with occasional on-location portraiture, led to strong community engagement and allowed each shoot to unfold naturally, often producing exciting results.
Made to Move reminds viewers that, like many passionate physical pursuits, the bumps and bruises of life are often quickly forgotten within a supportive community that encourages individuals to get back on their feet and keep striving forward.
