Ruth Alraei

Canadian native, Ruth Alraei, is a conceptual photographer, artist, and graphic designer. Ever since Alraei was a child, she has expressed herself through creating what she thought was “beautiful” in various mediums. Driven by curiosity and a deep fascination with people and culture, she constantly found herself asking the "why" questions. Inspired by many strong female visual artists such as Frida Kahlo, Vivian Maier, and Ana Mendieta - Alraei intentionally follows in their footsteps and draws inspiration from authenticity, raw expressions of painful experiences related to the woman's body and is not afraid to put her body on display in her work to change societal norms.

The main subject of Alraei's work is celebrating women's body hair with her use of light, color, collage to make beautiful natural things that are shamed by society. By her use of abstract photographs of body hair, collaged with ethereal floral photographs, Alraei takes something which is societally considered masculine and gives back to its natural feminine energy. Driven by her own experiences and passions, her creative process consists of going through an intense critical thinking process, where she places herself in the viewers’ shoes and reflects upon what they will take away from her imagery. Focused on self-expression and challenging beauty standards, it is important to note that Alraei’s work is best viewed in an exhibition space that utilizes all the senses.
