Crystal Lewis is a graphic designer and photographer exploring themes within black culture. For this body of work, Xpression, Crystal focused on the cultural aspect of black hair. Encompassing many meanings, X denotes an unknown or unspecified person or thing when its value is yet to be known. Much like the X, the complex identity of black culture seems to perplex the minds of many. Much like the X, black culture cannot be defined by one simple meaning. Much like the X, the value of black culture is yet to be known. It is not that it has no value; there is simply a lack of knowledge and understanding. This series is just a small glimpse into the beauty and uniqueness of black culture, Allowing a space for true expression and pride of the culture to be shown. X marks the beginning or continuation of your knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of black culture.
