Ashley Chruszcz

Revolving around our current times, Ashley Chruszcz photographically told the stories of her neighbors in Riverside, California. Seeing many numbers of businesses affected by the lockdown on the news, yet each number is a human experiencing real-life situations. Focusing on creating captivating images that engage the viewer and help them understand the community of small businesses better. Capturing various small businesses from car maintenance, plant shops, and fresh produce. Each owner held a different story of their life and what the past year has meant for them. Many have struggled through Covid-19, while others have benefitted. It was moving to hear and understand these people and their stories - showing honor to them by documenting who they are.

From a photography standpoint, Ashley was able to learn things and test various techniques. From this project, she learned that small businesses are there to sell their items. Oftentimes felt in their way or an inconvenience to them, however, they were always appreciative of the final images. Many businesses were indoors, therefore creating artificial light. While Ashley understands light and is able to capture it well, she is truly drawn to the sun and the beauty it holds.
