Chest heaving, lungs burning, limbs aching, sweat dripping, the taste of iron. A strange addiction to testing what the human body is capable of, even when no one is watching. The feeling of adrenaline running through one’s veins, the stress hormone that prepares muscles for exertion, igniting feelings of nervous pure excitement.

Enter the world of unconventional sports and athletics. A culture where freedom of style and independence reigns, and passion-driven, self-motivated, resilient individuals challenge the traditional ideas of sports. A culture where teammates are often fellow competitors, all of who are so passionate about evolving their sport that they create a community amongst themselves.

Chasing Adrenaline is a project by Alicia Berardelli that focuses on capturing the beauty of each individual’s athletic abilities through clean and graphic compositions that exude passion, and unregulated, unrestrained, pure physical expression. The inspiration behind this project is the question of, what drives an athlete? Is it passion? Addiction? Madness?

As she accompanies each athlete to a variety of locations and skates, bikes, skis, and explores the areas with them, Alicia experiences their worlds, one by one, and works to share this experience with the viewer. This work to meant to empower the athletes collaborated with, expose alternative athletics to those who may have not seen them before, appeal to commercial clients, convey a feeling of freedom, and challenge viewers to ask themselves, what drives an athlete?
